Project Objective
The goal of this piece was to create a playable 2D platformer. The character would be able to explore an environment and collect coins by running and jumping. I first created a game concept and a character to base it around. Using pixel art, I created assets and animation cycles that I then plugged into Unreal and programmed using Unreal Blueprint Scripting. Finally, I screen-recorded a play-through of the finished game.
Concept
The game, set in 2183, follows the pirate Cabur Larran as he adventures through the multilevel Moon spaceport Jaro in search of the elusive Questing Beast. The Questing Beast has promised, (via MarsList), to sell Cabur a newly refurbished vintage 2110s Honda SpaceOdyssey. Unfortunately, Cabur first has to find them and gather enough dilithium crystals along the way to trade for the hovercraft.
Cabur is a quick draw with his Starscatter Rapier. The spaceport is rife with neon signage advertising oxygen bars, rogue robots, strange foliage, and bursts of crystals. The dilithium crystals glow yellow and orange and spark occasionally. In the distance, twin moons and noxious purple clouds loom over Jaro.
