Project Objective
The goal of this piece was to create our own 2D video game, focusing on character design and creating a game design document for the game. We created an entire game concept, including characters, story, settings, mechanics, and concept art that could be included in a final document used to pitch our video game. We practiced concept art, action cycles, and idea development over the course of the project. We developed two characters and environments through sketches, character sheets, and fully colored illustrations.

Echtrae
Echtrae features a rich and immersive universe, incorporating mythologies and settings rarely explored. With two separate but coinciding storylines, you get to journey two different realms and encounter twice as many characters, puzzles, and scenarios. Play as one of two mythical creatures with specialized power sets and customize your character’s appearance. Train with legendary heroes, make deals with the sidhe, explore historical cultural centers, learn exciting new spells, and defeat supernatural evils.

Story/game overview

Set in the 730s in the Northern Hebrides, Muirgheal, a selkie, and Flannai, a ceasg (grilse mermaid), are leaders of a warrior group protecting the isolated mixed species settlement they call home. Their home is soon attacked by an enemy they have yet to encounter, the ancient Fomorians, who were said to have been locked away in the Otherworld by the Tuatha De Dannan. Muirgheal is captured, having given her selkie coat to Flanna and therefore being unable to escape. Muirgheal is taken to the Otherworld, and the two warriors must find their way to be reunited. As Muirgheal fights her way through the Otherworld and encounters great beasts and gods, Flannai must brave the human world and travel across Eriu and Alba to meet her at the entrance to the Otherworld. After being reunited at Tech Duinn, they must finally defeat Balor, leader of the Fomorians, and send him back to the Otherworld once more.

Characters:

Muirgheal: A 28 year old Selkie and lead protector of her village. Reserved, compassionate, and knowledgeable. Can be guarded and quick to anger, but is really a big softie most of the time. Setig (wife) of Flannai

Flannai: A 29 year old Ceasg (Salmon mermaid) and protector of her village. Second in command to Muirgheal, who is also her Setig (wife). She is fiery and adventurous, but also secretly very anxious. She believes there is good in everyone and seeks to prove it.

Be Chuille: Muirgheal’s Patron Goddess. Wild and dangerous, she has tumultuous emotions, which she channels into her powerful magic to create beautiful things.

Scatha: Warrior of Old, and trainer of Flannai. She is fairly jaded and is at first reluctant to train Flannai. She has seen what the Fomorians can do and she is reluctant to send someone once more into the fray.

The Fomorians: Ancient opponents to the Tuatha De, they embody all of the evil in the world

Balor: King of the Fomorrians. He is old and violent. He is the one who sends Muirgheal to the Otherworld.
